Baldur’s Gate Extended Edition Guide – What Does it all Mean?

Having played the original Baldur’s Gates pretty thoroughly we knew what we were doing from the get go. But for a lot of new players (or the newer generation of D&Ders) many people don’t know what thing such as THAC0 mean or other key mechanics.

For the best walkthrough we can find of BGII go here!

Stat Tables

We are going to start at the beginning by going into detail about the starting stats (they work differently from the newer D&D editions and DDO!). At the beginning of the game you can “min/max” your character so that attributes that aren’t important for your character (INT / WIS isn’t too great for a fighter for example) can be remarkably low and others (STR / CON / DEX for a fighter) can be far higher.

If you are playing BGII:EE then don’t worry if your 18:xx is reasonably low as there are a lot of items that will boost this to 19+ or even tomes available in BG I.

THAC0

THAC0 stands for “to hit armour class 0”. Your character will roll a d20 every time they make an attack. If your opponents AC is 0 then you will need to roll above your THAC0 or equal to it. If their armour class is higher, lets say ten, then you minus 10 from your THAC0 (if their armour is -x then you need to add x).

Weapon Proficiency

Proficiency Points Level Benefits with weapon
1 Proficient Normal THAC0 while using weapon
2 Specialized +1 THAC0. +2 damage. +1/2 attacks per round
3 Mastery +2 THAC0. +2 damage. +1/2 attacks per round
4 High Mastery +2 THAC0. +3 damage. +1/2 attacks per round. -1 speed factor to weapon.
5 Grand Mastery +2 THAC0. +4 damage. +1/2 attacks per round. -3 speed factor to weapon

Saving Throws

Similar to THAC0. At certain points (avoiding spells or dragon fire for example) you will be required to make another d20 roll. You have to roll above or equal to your saving throw. There are spells however that will lower your roll “-4 to spell save”.
